This day, in history!

This day (21 September) in 1937, "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien, was published. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was an authority on Old English and Middle English. He was fascinated by the myths and legends they enshrined, which inspired him to create a whole mythological world of his own. One day in the early 1930s at the Oxford University, he was marking some examination papers to earn a bit of extra money when a strange sentence popped into his mind: ‘In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.’ What a hobbit was, he said afterwards, he had no idea at all, but he gradually built up a story. The Hobbit is set during The Third Age within Tolkien's fictional universe and follows the quest of home-loving hobbit Bilbo Baggins to win a share of the treasure guarded by Smaug the dragon. Bilbo's journey takes him from light-hearted, rural surroundings into more sinister territory. The book went to print only after publisher Sir Stanley Unwin paid his 10-year-old son to read it. The boy gave the book rave reviews, and the rest is Hobbit history. Personal growth and forms of heroism are central themes of the story, along with motifs of warfare. These themes have led critics to view Tolkien's own experiences during World War I as instrumental in shaping the story. While reliable figures are difficult to obtain, estimated global sales have been around 100 million copies since 1937. Fun Fact :- There are no female characters in The Hobbit. The only one mentioned is Belladonna Took. . . . . . #onthisday

Walking the road of life - happy birthday to me . Sat Nam: Truth is my Identity
