Today marks the beginning of intensified research collaborations in the field of water and land management with South Africa: Eurac Research and the University of The Free State in South Africa just signed a Memorandum of Understanding. (photo: on the left Ralph Vincent Clark, director of the Afromontane Research Unit and on the right Roland Psenner, President of Eurac Research). One project is already on the way, lead by our Center for Global Mountain Safeguard Research-UNU-EHS: The Maloti-Drakensberg Mountains on the border between Lesotho and South Africa are experiencing heavy land degradation due to intensive human activities such as agriculture, mining and tourism. In a combined effort, researchers from different fields – biology, sociology/anthropology, geography, IT communication -- will dig deeper to understand the specific causes of this degradation and how to prevent them. #landdegradation @UNUEHS @usfuv
