The Gentle Reminder

I planned to have a blog post out today about why I chose a PhD over law school, but today is my husband’s birthday, and the fall weather is sumptuous, so you will see it tomorrow instead! Happy Friday, everyone! 🎃🧡

Thanks for dropping me off on my first day Murph - was a total success #gradlife

Grad school is: spending 15 minutes looking up a word or a theoretical model referenced in the title of an article before you even read the first line so you have a shot at understanding it at all. On another note, we survived 4 whole weeks!! This week, the rigor started to catch up and sink in as some of my dazed disbelief that I’m even here started wearing off. The same is still true, though: I’m so happy here and I love this adventure! • • • • • #gradlife

Peter T. Anteater and I have that @UCIrvine Graduate Welcome & Orientation! 🐜🍴⁣ ⁣ Friday’s have always been near and dear to my heart. ♥️ I didn’t realize how near until graduate school.⁣ ⁣ My first few years at UCI were a tough adjustment. 🤕 I didn’t have many close friends nearby as I was used to, and my partner was working 2 different jobs including weekend nights. ⁣ ⁣ As a consequence I started saying ‘yes’ to things to fill my empty time. ⏳ Whether it was completing different projects, working on Friday nights, or hanging out with people I wasn’t always comfortable being around (usually due to how tired I constantly was as a new graduate student). 😴⁣ ⁣ It didn’t hit me how much time I was giving to others until a friend told me, “you need to surround yourself with those who return your energy.” In that moment I realized those you surround yourself with can just be 𝐲𝐨𝐮 - discovering ways to find joy and bring back 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 energy. ⁣ ⁣ So here’s my biggest advice to incoming : it is ok to say ‘no’ to things. 🚫 Saying ‘no’ to more means you can say ‘yes’ to other things and people that return your energy. ✨ ⁣ ⁣ For me, that includes saying yes to -⁣ hanging out with my dog 🐶⁣ some Netflix 📺⁣ and being with me, myself, and I on a night like the only child I am. 💃🏻⁣ ⁣ Saying yes to these things returns my energy so I work more efficiently on my research come Monday morning. I still feel guilty for saying no at times, but I’m working on it. 💪⁣ ⁣ Do you have any tips for saying ‘no’? 💡 Please do share, I could definitely use some new ones!⁣
