National Trust - Calke Abbey

⁣⁣⁣ A baby changing table. The back of the car. A dirty toilet floor. These are some of the realities people face with Only 1% of visitor attractions having a changing places toilet. Just 1% 💔⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Calke abbey is a place close to our home and too our hearts. We’ve been visiting here regularly since the boys were babies, and they love it here. And thanks to the @ntcalkeabbey installing an adult toilet its a place we now know we can continue to visit & enjoy no matter their abilities in the future, and I am honestly so grateful for that. ⁣⁣Thank you @nationaltrust ⁣⁣ ⁣ ⁣ But 1% thats just heartbreaking doesn’t everyone deserve the same opportunities, and access to places no matter their abilities & needs?!⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ***Changing places toilets are in addition to standard accessible/disabled toilets. The absence of these suitable toilets mean that people with complex disabilities who need assistance cannot take part in activities such as shopping, going out for a meal, visiting attractions or attending events. Without a suitable changing bench and hoist, many people with complex needs have to be laid on unhygienic toilet floors or become trapped in their own homes.***

I've been debating copying @shaneburcaw's --(him and his fiance YT is soooooo funny!!!)-- Instagram's gratitude journal style in my post... so here goes! 9/21: My sister and her boyfriend(Andre) visited me. Andre bought sugarcane (my favorite!) and we chatted for a bit. I then went to welcome Andy after his 100 mile marathon(!!!) and he was so happy to see me at the finish line. The irony of both my sister and my boyfriend having a variation of the same name is not lost upon us ... These things make me smile. 9/22: Rode my new bike from my apartment with Andy Oh to the event and ran into Carolyn! These two are some of the co-organizers for the Access + Ability buildathon and am so honored they believe in me and am excited about the work we can create together. is so important! I was so happy to talk with them that the hours flew by. These things make me smile. . . . rights rights

Access-Centered Movement®️™️

“Public shaming, microassaults, and discrimination due to deviation from the status quo, deserve public accountability and not just on the part of the person. Microappreciations hurt, especially when you really needed someone to stand in solidarity with you in public. What good is showing solidarity privately (micro appreciation) when you failed to do so for a harm that occurred publicly. Individuals who find purpose in taking risks for the betterment of their communities need to be held, protected, and affirmed in public just as much as they are in private.” —Tynesha (Black Youth Project). . . . . . . rights
