𝑫𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒂 𝒄𝒂𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒇 "𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑩𝑳𝑨𝑯𝑺"? . . In Julia Ross' book, 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑀𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝐶𝑢𝑟𝑒, she coins the phrase "The Blahs" to describe a type of depression characterized by a catecholamine deficiency. Catecholamines are the group of brain chemicals that fill us with life and vitality: dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine. . . In the last post I talked about the dark cloud depression of serotonin deficiency - marked by negativity, obsessiveness, anxiety and insomnia. In this case of "the blahs", however, we're talking about a different type of depression. Rather than too little sleep, you might be sleeping too much. You might have trouble getting yourself out of bed in the morning, or trouble finding the energy or motivation to take on the tasks of the day. Instead of obsessive thoughts, you may not be feeling motivated or enthusiastic about anything at all. . . This type of depression, more than anything else, is the most mistreated and over-prescribed area of mental heath treatment, in my opinion. Of course there could be a severe serotonin deficiency going on at the same time that isn't responding to 5-HTP, but too often we are prescribing SSRIs to treat a condition that is frequently lifted simply with short-term amino acids : specifically Tyrosine. . . Tyrosine is the immediate precursor to all of the catecholamines (and some endorphins) and gets absolutely crushed with long-term drug use, especially the stimulants (Adderall, Ritalin, cocaine, methamphetamine, etc.). Read 'RULE 5' on our website to learn more about Tyrosine. . . General precautions : don't use tyrosine if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, have schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. . . General initial dosing: 500 mg capsules, 1-2 caps on an empty stomach 3 times daily. Don't take your last dose after 3pm. Omega-3-Fish oils and Vitamin D supplementation help convert tyrosine to catecholamines (more about that later). . . RECOVER WELL ♥️

𝐻𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑜𝑓 5-𝐻𝑇𝑃? . . Most people come into sobriety on the heels of some serious life conditions so there are legimitate reasons to feel anxious, depressed, irritable, pessimistic, etc. But when the symptoms don't seem to match up with what is going on in your life, or when they just never seem to go away, it could be a chemical imbalance. . . Serotonin deficiency seems to be the most common mood problem - not just among people in recovery but most people with mood disorders. Serotonin is the primary defense against anxiety and depression so getting its balance corrected is critical. When serotonin levels are optimized, the mind begins transmitting positive feelings and optimistic thoughts. If it's not, thoughts tend to be dark and disturbing. . . Although there is a time and place for pharmaceutical intervention, if we can avoid it with nutritional supplementation, all the better. A lot of drugs - particularly opioids and alcohol - tend to crush the brain's natural ability to make serotonin. Since it is synthesized directly from 5-HTP, supplementing this amino acid has worked wonders for so many people. Read "RULE 5" on our website for more info. . . Although each case is different, a general approach is two doses throughout the day - one in mid-afternoon and one 1-2 hours before bedtime.  The dose should be between 50-150mg on an empty stomach. . . You'll know when the serotonin stores are filled up because you might even notice feeling too relaxed during the day, even sleepy, or you may get a headache shortly after you take your dose.  These are signs that you have corrected the deficiency and can back off from the supplement. . .
