This woman is helping to prepare the site where over 130 new transitional shelters are being built in to accommodate those fleeing Boko Haram. 4 years ago, violence forced the people of Maina Kaderi, Niger to leave their homes. After several months on the move, the displaced tried to return, but continued instability forced them to relocate once again. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is now helping to build the displaced people new homes in Niger. In conflict-affected region around the world, IOM helps ensure the orderly and humane management of migration and assists in the search for practical solutions to migration challenges. Dogs with the K9 Unit in Geneva, and other UN offices around the world are highly-trained in the detection of explosives and firearms. The spend their days checking vehicles, meeting rooms, packages and anything else needed. They are looked after and live with specially-certified dog handlers with the UN Security Service. Not only do they contribute directly to food security, but they are key to conserving biodiversity.
