In an effort to curb ocean pollution, officials in England are banning plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds, aka Q-Tips, starting in April 2020. The government estimates that about 4.7 billion plastic straws, 316 million plastic stirrers and 1.8 billion plastic-stemmed cotton buds are used in England each year. “Urgent and decisive action is needed to tackle plastic pollution and protect our environment,” said Environment Secretary Michael Gove. The governments of Scotland and Wales are considering similar measures. (📸: Phatthanit/Shutterstock)

Washington just became the first state to legalize the composting of human bodies as an alternative to burial or cremation. In composting, which advocates say is an environmentally friendly process, a body is "covered in natural materials, like straw or wood chips, and over the course of about three to seven weeks...it breaks down into soil," says Katrina Spade, CEO of the human composting company Recompose. Above, Spade is pictured in a Seattle cemetery holding a sample of compost material left from the decomposition of a cow. (📸: Elaine Thompson/AP)

Watch as Carmelo Isgro sorts through several pounds of plastic waste that were recovered from the stomach of a young sperm whale after it washed ashore in Sicily. Isgro, who works at the University of Messina's natural history museum and was involved in the procedure, said the whale was so young that "her teeth haven't come out yet," and that the plastic probably created a block that didn't let the food in. "I'm still shocked because her belly was completely full, swollen with plastic," Isgro said. (📸: Greenpeace Italy)

More than 400 million pieces of plastic — including about 370,000 toothbrushes and a million shoes — have washed ashore on the remote Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean, according to new research. The 27 islands, home to about 500 people, are often marketed to tourists as an unspoiled paradise. "Islands such as these are like canaries in a coal mine, and it's increasingly urgent that we act on the warnings they are giving us," said marine scientist Jennifer Lavers, who led the study.

Imagine skipping all the traffic and flying to your destination 🚕🛩That's what one German start-up is hoping to unveil. Here's an electric flying air prototype that could get you to - and from - your destination mid-air. Even better? You can book it through an app. The company, Lilium, didn't reveal how much the service would cost but claims that it will be "comparable in price" with regular taxis. The company faces stiff competition with other big names investing in flying cars — including Uber, Boeing and Rolls Royce. (🎥: Lilium)

Electric cars make up only a tiny fraction of the automobiles sold worldwide, but by 2040 they could make up 57% of all passenger car sales 🚗🔌 according to an analysis by Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Electric cars are coming close to matching gasoline- and diesel-powered cars in purchase price and they already cost less to operate. That means that electric cars will soon overtake internal combustion-powered cars as the more economical choice for consumers 🌿 For more, follow @cnnbusiness.

“I will be damned if the same politicians who refused to act then are going to try to come back today and say we need a middle-of-the-road approach to save our lives,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said at a rally Monday, taking aim at Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. The former vice president, who has been under fire from some progressives over his stance on climate change, responded Tuesday: “I've never been 'middle of the road' on the environment … take a look at the record.”
