@catiabandeiras β€’ β€’ β€’ β€’ β€’ β€’ Last PhD Poster presentation! . Here's the final result of my poster. So, I did a very simple poster, focused more on presenting the problem and solution, as I mentioned on the last post. . The event was quite fun, and I learned about awesome research from other students and also from professors! We also had the chance to have a lunch with professors and alumni, and I got to learn a lot about space technology as plenty of talks were about this. Right on the day that the first direct photograph of a black hole was released! . It was also nice to explain my thesis to others and discuss entrepreneurial implications and how much background research and multidisciplinary collaborations doing this tool actually involved! . On more practical skills, we also had workshops on scientific writing, public speaking and we saw some colleagues take part on a pitch competition. . This event came at, I must say, the most stressful time of my PhD journey. However, it was nice to take the time for this and I thank my school @tecnico_lisboa for the chance! :) . #womeninstem

I’m a biochemistry PhD student, but I work with cell lines πŸ€” weird? Or normal? . . If you didn’t already know, I work in a structural biology lab that focuses on understanding how various proteins function using biochemical and structural techniques. However, I also work with cell lines..... which some people think is strange. But is it? . . Personally for what I work on, nope. It’s the norm. I work on the JAK-STAT pathway, studying how it’s involved in blood cancers when it’s not regulated properly. I study these proteins in isolation in vitro, but I also like to look in cells to see what happens if I know them out or over express them. . . Before I started my PhD I had already had a lot of experience with cell culture so it wasn’t something new I picked up, and I thought it was a valuable skill to bring into my project! . . Really the big change for me in starting my PhD was learning to be a biochemist instead of just a cell biologist. But turns out, I can do cell bio, biochem and molecular biology πŸ§ͺ 🧫 🧬which is cool! I like having different techniques under my belt. But it’s also completely ok to have a PhD where you really focus on one technique or discipline! I know people who only do microscopy and that’s their jam, and they kill it! . . What techniques do you use in the lab? Do you do structural biology too?

When your tshirt matches your Easter Break viewing! . I know for a lot of us PhDers it will be a working weekend for us. But after the past few weeks I've had I've decided to take a few days off. . I thought I was okay and wasn't stressed, but have been suffering from more migraines than usual over the past month especially. This coupled with worsening mental health usually tells me to listen. It's just ashame it has to come to this to make me realise I need to slow down. . In some ways I don't want to slow down because it's coming up for my annual review, but a day or two wont hurt. So even though I'm staying out of the sun to keep the migraines at bay, I'm taking some time to myself. . Are you? πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡ #womeninstem //
