There's a reason why there are rats in my photo! This won't be used as an photo but I'm hoping my will let me use one like it for my new , HARD SCIENCE, which is about a 17-year old girl with an amazing brain for science who comes up with a way of bringing back recently dead organisms...including rats. The here are white, yes, but they are , bred by friends of mine in the . Their names are Jam and Spice. #womeninscience

ANNA WESSELS WILLIAMS (1863-1954) . . Anna Wessels Williams, M.D. was a pioneer in infectious disease research and a public health advocate who worked on various diseases such as diphtheria, scarlet fever, rabies, influenza, polio & trachoma. She discovered an effective treatment for diphtheria and a rapid diagnostic for rabies. . . After receiving her M.D. in 1891 she chose to pursue research instead of practicing medicine. . . In 1894, Dr. Williams started working as a Bacteriologist to study diphtheria, which was spreading at near epidemic rates. Her breakthrough achievement was the identification & isolation of a new strain of the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae that produced high amounts of toxin. This led to faster production of the anti-toxin at a cheaper price, that could be distributed to poor families for free. . . The new strain, however, was named Park-Williams (or Park8), after the name of the laboratory director Dr. William H. Park. . . After her visit to Pasteur Institute in Paris in 1896, Dr. Williams developed an effective rabies vaccine that could be mass-produced. She developed a protocol of staining brain tissue that could detect rabies within minutes rather than days, making it the standard rabies diagnostic test for decades to come. . . Dr. Williams published several influential books & numerous research papers. She became the Assistant Director of New York City Research Laboratories in 1905, was elected the President of Woman’s Medical Society of New York in 1915 & was the 1st woman to be appointed Chair of the laboratory section of American Public Health Association in 1932. . . Dr. Williams enthused confidence and mentored other female professionals joining the field. She not only helped save countless lives, but her seminal discoveries laid the foundation in immunology research for future generations of clinicians and scientists. . . Meet our new member, Paigle Lemen. Paige is a Neurobehavioralist currently working for the U.S. Navy. Her research focuses on the role of chronic stress in psychiatric disorders, such as addiction and PTSD. This achieved by tracking activity in brain neurons (C-Fos mapping), hormone levels, and running behavioral evaluations. She currently has her B.S. in Neurobiology and will begin her PhD in August by continuing her studies in addiction. Outside of the lab, she enjoys advocating for science and communicating science to the public, as well as staying fit and active both mentally and physically. Chronic stress: There are multiple techniques used to study behavior in animal models. For example, an adolescent chronic stress model can be used to study the predisposition of psychiatric disorders later in life, such as addiction and PTSD. One common model to mimic chronic stress is by creating mild stressors to be randomized during a 2-week period. Stressors could include restraint, shakers, hypoxia, overcrowding, single-housing, and forced swim. Stressors happen once in the AM and once in the PM, with occasional overnight stressors. After a chronic stress model, animals need a 4-week period of no stressors until they can be tested for possible effects. There are multiple evaluations that can be done to measure behavioral effects as well. Self-administration is a common way to measure the likelihood one will abuse and become addicted to a drug after use in adulthood after adolescent chronic stress. This involves intravenously connecting a drug to an animal through the vein, and a lever that the animal can push to be given the drug. A fear conditioning paradigm can be used to measure the ability one can cope with stress in adulthood after adolescent chronic stress. This involves an auditory tone, followed by a mild shock. Then the shock is taken away and only the tone is present. Freezing behavior is measured to evaluate the ability to adapt to the environmental change; the extinction of the associate between tone and shock. Behavioral evaluations are usually accompanied by other measurements, such as hormone levels. Continued in comments...
