Reposted from @greenpeaceafrica - We need to take action to protect the species facing human-induced mass extinction. If we caused it, we can also stop it. Click on the link in our bio and rise up to protect Africa’s largest rainforest 🌳🐒 #IPBES7 🌲 -

A recent Global Assessment Report about biodiversity from the @unitednations found that approximately 1 million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction, more than ever before in human history. The Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep, for instance, has been listed as endangered since 2000. See the link in our bio to learn 10 key findings from the report. (Photo from @usfws) #IPBES7

: is everything: every breath we take, every bite of food we eat, every drink, every creature that inspires us and plant that heals us. 💧🌽🐘💊 it's also the little animals and unsung fungi that we may not recognize or understand but that play incredibly important roles in the water cycle, nutrient flows, and food webs. 🌍Ours is a living planet, not a machine. The diversity of life and the many connections within it are the two pillars that support the world as we know it. If we took an hour to celebrate each species on Earth, we would spend the next 9️⃣9️⃣3️⃣ years appreciating every bird, bacteria, beetle, and tree that is part of our web of life! 🕸 Two weeks ago, the 7 global assessment on biodiversity showed an alarming decline in species and populations of plants and wildlife 📉‼️ 1,000,000 species are threatened with extinction in the next few decades because of us and what we're doing to the planet. Forget about our kids and grandkids never seeing a wild elephant or tiger - this is within our very own lifetimes. 🐅🐘 It doesn't have to be this way though. We don't need to feel hopeless and accept the elimination of rhinos, lemurs, koalas, pangolins, amphibians, sharks, and vaquita before our eyes. We can change our governments, our businesses, our communities, and our behaviors to save that which makes life worth living. 🌍 I made this piece for my bro Bradley, who loves the Earth and is working to change how our financial and technology systems impact the environment. The Earth is what we all have in common. Let's take care of each other by taking care of her.

🎥 Video on 2nd slide 🎥 Nature is in trouble. The ecological crisis we’re in could be as dangerous to human life as climate change. 🌍😢⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ On this year's International Day for Biological Diversity, we want to draw attention to the biodiversity loss we're facing. Leading scientists believe that biodiversity loss is as big a threat to humanity as climate change and that we’re living through a sixth mass extinction event. This is not just a threat to nature and all its wonder, but to us.⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ Human life depends on nature. Sir Bob Watson from @ipbes_ says that biodiversity loss will affect food and water security as well as human health - all essential for our wellbeing on the planet.⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ Watch all videos of Unearthed's Life Support series to understand why the ecological crisis matters to every human on the planet and check out Unearthed's website to get more information, too (links in bio).⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ Let's fight biodiversity loss by speaking out loud against e.g. deforestation, pollution of our oceans and rivers and by supporting more environmental friendliness! ⠀⠀ 🐯🐸🌴🐧🐝🌾🦋🐢🌻🐠🐬🌺🐋🐊⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ Our European community has the change to do that during the : let's !⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ Picture © Alex Yallop / Greenpeace⠀⠀ Video © Unearthed Greenpeace⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ #ipbes7

World with this years theme 'Our Biodiversity, Our Health, Our Food' - a topic that will become more and more important in the next few years!⠀ .⠀ Only a few weeks ago, the #IPBES7 report by the UN stated that ONE MILLION species are at risk of extinction. Two thirds of our oceans are damaged, with over-fishing and plastic waste being a huge threat to all marine animals. ⠀ .⠀ 🐟 What is a luxury topic in 'rich' countries, feeds people in other regions of the world. In Africa and Asia, is one of mankind's most important sources of protein and food.⠀ If edible fish species keep on declining in this speed, 30 million local fishermen worldwide will have no income and millions more will have no food. ⠀ .⠀ It is absolutely crucial, that all of us take a big effort to prevent this from happening! Stop eating fish and stop consuming plastic - as much as you can. The world and all its will thank you for it - us humans included! 💙⠀ .⠀ ⠀ ⠀

1 million at risk of extinction, 60% of lost. Recent assessments of loss are our wake up call, not a doomsday message! We can turn things around & avert a crisis if we choose to. The survival of wildlife is in our hands. #IPBES7 Here are some ideas bit.ly/2H0etYd

Posted @withrepost@leonardodicaprio@unenvironment: 🚨 A new report from @ipbes_ warns: Nature is declining globally at rates unprecedented in human history — and the rate of species extinctions is accelerating, with grave impacts on people around the world now likely. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣⚠ 1,000,000 species are threatened with extinction, many within decades.⁣🔺Transformative changes are needed to restore and protect nature.⁣ ⁣ #ipbes7

#ipbes7
