Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf? One of the biggest myths surrounding wolves - and many other predators- is that they kill for fun. That they’ll kill hunting dogs for fun. That they’ll kill scores of elk for fun. This is simply not true. And it comes down to biology. An average wolf weighs 110-130 pounds. Elk weigh 400-600 pounds. Wolves, like any other predator, only go after prey they think they can tackle. If they fail, they run the risk of severe injury or death. That’s why you don’t see cheetahs running down elephants, and even a pride of lions takes caution when deciding to hunt a giraffe or an elephant. One swift kick, one misstep, means death. Same for wolves. If they’re trying to kill an elk, they’re doing it out of necessity. • So what about those reports where wolves kill 5, 10, 15 elk in one day and just seemingly leave them there for no reason? Such was the case in Wyoming 2016 when a wolf pack killed 19 elk and vanished. This is an example of a surplus kill. Especially in the winter, like this WY attack, wolves will kill more elk or moose than they can eat immediately.  The elk are week and hindered by the deep snow. However, they will return to that cache to finish eating over many days or weeks after. Then why didn’t the wolves come back for the 19 elk? Wolves are actually timid of humans, so they were likely run off by the scent of humans around the discovered elk, or run off by other scavengers. Another case occurred in 2006 in Yellowstone when 5 elk were killed in a day by a wolf pack- but over the course of 2 weeks, the wolves came back and finished it all. • What about hunting dogs? Why do wolves kill them when they don’t eat them? Interspecific competition. The wolves see the dogs as potential competition for their prey, so they take them out to ensure they can have the kills. It’s the same reason lions kill leopards and why leopards kill cheetahs. It’s not for fun- it’s for survival. • • Visit www.saveourwolves.org before it’s too late. 📸: @christian.riese71 #graywolf

It’s true. IDAHO kills 20% of its wolf population a year - with a high of though 2013’s 38.9%. In 2014, hunters killed 256 wolves and control killed 67. Wolves killed only a reported 143 livestock this year. That totals 28.2% of ID wolves killed. • • In the years when WYOMING has delisted wolves, they also have killed close to or more than 20% of their wolves a year; with a high of 27.4% in 2016. If you take out the Yellowstone population, this number gets even higher. Wolves killed only a reported 160 livestock yet control killed 75 and hunters killed 256. • • In the last 9 years only in 2010 has MONTANA not killed at least 20% of their wolves a year (18.9%). In 2016, they killed a record 40% of their population, driving the wolf population to a record low by the end. Wolves killed only a reported 53 livestock that year, yet agencies killed 61 wolves and hunters killed 255. • • Wolves aren’t to blame for Yellowstone moose herds going down to 200- the fire in 1988 is. They aren’t to blame for the the caribou- even when wolves were culled in the area the caribou population still plummeted. Elk aren’t decimated. According to IFG “elk tag sales have increased for the last 5 years”. The 2017 harvest season was “30% above the 50 year average elk harvest”. In the winter of 2018, “statewide calf survival was 66 percent” higher than the “long term average of 55 to 65 percent. The so-called vanishing elk herds are attributed to “a shift in populations from the wilderness and backcountry areas toward the... forest lands, agriculture, and rural areas”. The same holds true for the elk populations in WY and MT. • • Join the fight now to give wolves more time to recover.
