The more you look the more you see. It’s funny how that works. Today I took a much needed walk. I spent most of it listening intently to my audiobook and getting lost in looking.

Last month, I quit my job. My rent-paying, security-producing, (and perceived by society as) “respectable” 9-5er desk job. It was my second job as a professional writer. Not the kind of writer who strings together freelance assignments and odd babysitter gigs to pay the bills, who operates on an unconventional schedule so as to have more slivers of time to dedicate to her beloved manuscript. This job was not that. This was the “real” thing. This gig offered stability, ample time off, vacation plans, and—dare I say it—retirement. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Note: This was ✨never ✨my first choice. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Another note: I ✨always ✨dreamed of being the kind of writer who wakes before the sun and sits at her writing desk in the pixelated hours of the early morning. A full cup of lukewarm coffee sits beside her untouched—fingers too busy striking her story out onto the keyboard for her to take a swig—and manuscript pages scribbled on and strewn about lay on the desk, her lap, the carpet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I feel more like this girl today than I did a month ago. More alive, really. Gosh, it’s an amazing feeling to do something you don’t feel like you’re drowning in. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

HOW TUESDAY! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How do you get back on track when you’ve fallen off the wagon? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Just start. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That’s it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Shifting your momentum back onto the “good side” is as simple as wasting no time in getting back to work. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I had quite the bender this weekend. There were weddings, birthday celebrations, cheeseburgers, ice cream sandwiches, bowls of pasta, cupcakes—you get the picture. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But now, I’m getting back to work, paying those dues, and not harping on every little thing I indulged in this weekend. Pay those dues and get to work this week. Not next week, or tomorrow, start NOW. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We’re basically professional wedding guests at this point. Got to celebrate the most beautiful couple this weekend for a magical night full of so much stinkin’ LOVE. 💕💗 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Some things I’ve learned during this wedding szn. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you shower first and let your hair air dry you can shave your wedding getting ready time down to a mere 50 minutes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tequila sodas all night is probably a bad idea. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Don’t expect not to cry. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Leading with your hand is for dancing with your parent—not your lover. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Donuts>cake. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When a wedding serves chocolate covered bacon—it’s automatically the best wedding known to man. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Donut bother me—I’m eating. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🍩WE MADE GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE PROTEIN DONUTS!! 🍩 ⠀⠀⠀⠀ I definitely need to invest in a donut pan after making these because I’m going to be a donut making machine! Other than having to rig up my muffin tin to behave more like a donut tin—this recipe didn’t disappoint. I put my own spin on it, too. Let me know if you give it a try! They were heavenly! & huge shoutout to @jarrettwbond22 for the inspo 🙌🏼 ⠀⠀⠀⠀ Makes 12 !! ⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ingredients: ⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1.) 1 scoop @1stphorm Level-1 German Chocolate Cake 2.) 1/2 scoop Chocolate Peanut Butter Pb2 3.) 1 cup Kodaik Cakes mix 4.) 2 eggs 5.) 1/2 cup apple sauce 6.) 1/2 cup water 7.) 1 tsp baking powder 8.) 1/3 cup stevia 9.) 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 10.) 1 tsp vanilla extract. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ Directions: 1.) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray donut baking pan with PAM (or rig up a muffin tin using tin foil although I don’t quite recommend it if you can avoid that hassle) 2.) Mix all the dry ingredients together in a bowl with a hand mixer, add in wet ingredients and continue to mix until all the ingredients are mixed well together. 3.) Scoop mix into each donut cup 4.) Bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes. Take them out and allow them to cool. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ Icing: Mix dark chocolate baking bits with almond milk on stovetop. Add in chocolate bits until you get the mixture thick enough. Dip tops of donuts in the mixture to frost. Let cool and enjoy! ⠀⠀⠀⠀

“Look to the person beside you and—whether you know them or not—smile at them and say hello. Today and everyday.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The world is a beautiful place. Full of miracles and views and gifts. But, the most beautiful bits should be the ones we make happen. The moments we make special. And the kindness we share with one another. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The world needs more kind. Make it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“Things turn out best for the people who make the best out of the way things turn out.” -Art Linkletter ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That’s the quote I chose to run beside my photo in my high school yearbook senior year. Damn is it true! Cheers to that, the weekend, & just a few more river cruises before summer closes its doors on us. 🧡🌊

You know when you listen to something on a podcast or hear something someone says or read something that really slaps yah in the face? 👏🏼Like, reallllyyyy gives yah a good one? Welp, this was mine this week. I’ll call it a “truth nugget.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀ “There are people who are busier than you who are doing more than you are.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do you feel the sting of that?! ⠀⠀⠀⠀ I get overwhelmed. I feel like I have a bijillion things to do and not enough time. I feel like I’m always leaving shit on the table. It’s time to buckle the heck up, turn that dial to crazy mode, and just really lock in. Because it’s true. There’s someone that has it worse who is doing it better. What’s your excuse? ⠀⠀⠀⠀ #

Stop creating drama for yourself. Too much of the time we’re drowning in our own negative narrative, telling ourselves stories like self-sabotaging broken records. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A short excerpt from my very own: My nose is too big. I’m not sexy enough. I’m too short & stumpy. I’ll never be able to quit my full-time job. I’ll never buy a house. My skin sucks. The spider veins on my leg are going to take over someday. No one wants to read my writing. I need a thousand rounds of botox. This shit always happens to me. Noone likes me. People think I’m a bitch girl. People think I’m a snoot. I’m not photogenic. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Blah. Blah. Blah. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Where the mind goes, energy flows.” At least that’s what my meditation guru says (@davidjimeditation). The more real estate I give these thoughts in my brain—the more they’ll materialize. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Noone wants to read my writing.” could quickly become no one actually wanting to read my writing because if I keep thinking that I may very well stop writing all together. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Focus on what you bring to the table, what’s possible, the good. (Believe me there’s a bunch!) And hush all that self sabotage storytime bullshit. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

HOW TUESDAY: How to cram in a workout on vacation without having FOMO. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I get it, it’s vacation. You’re supposed to relax, unplug, and venture away from regularly scheduled programming. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ BUT—getting a workout in while on vacay not only can help you feel a lot better dyring your vaca, it can make getting back into the groove a lot less painful when it’s time to return to reality. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I recently went on a long weekend trip to Saratoga Springs. Was there for 3 nights and this workout was the only one I got in—but it made a difference. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Workout deets. 6 rounds 10 heels to heavens on bench 10 devils presses 1 minute row machine ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Rules for vacation workouts. ⤵️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Up n’ at em: Get it over with! Set your alarm 30 minutes- 1 hr before you’d typically wake up on vaca & get to work. Fast. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Small but mighty: If it’s a long weekend, have your heart set on as little as one workout during your trip. If you’re gone for a week, as little as two workouts will help you keep that positive momentum going. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In n’ Out: Make it quick. Vacation workouts for me are typically a version of HIIT--EMOMs or Metcon-- because you want something that’s high intensity and going to spike that heart rate quickly so you can get back to vaca mode asap. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Life has been CRAZY lately (is there ever a time when it’s not?! And I forgot to tell you guys that a small snippet of my writing was PUBLISHED! Like, for real published, in the indie literary magazine of my dreams @ruminatemag !! 📚📖📝✏️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Although it’s not a feature & shows up in the reader’s notes section of this issue I’m still really super proud of myself—and my work. There’s something about seeing your name in a real-world, big-girl publication that I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of. ⠀⠀⠀ To support @ruminatemag & all the other writer humans like myself- visit their page & learn how to subscribe on their website. ⠀⠀⠀

I’ve been working out with my momma for something like a decade. It started with group classes, then morphed into us doing our own thing—for as long as I can remember we’ve been dancing this dance of being workout buddies & then her falling off the wagon & then me giving her hell & annoying her to her breaking point & then she picks things back up again—repeat for entirety. (sound familiar mom? @danyledasilva) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I started coaching the @1stphorm summer sprint challenge, she of course was one of the first person I asked to join. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ She made excuses. Said things like: “I’m not no body builder, Emily,” “I can’t move like you, I’m fifty-somethin’,” and, my personal favorite, “I’m not gonna be like in the olympics, Em.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I said things back. Things like: “You don’t have to be a body builder, Mom,” and “ I realize you’re fifty-somethin’ it doesn’t matter,” and “No shit, you’re not gonna be in the olympics, neither am I!?” When it came time to sign up, she had to be forced. When it came time to set up the app, she had to be forced. On the day of the deadline for her before photos I needed to drive over to her house, practically pick her out something to wear, and take the damn pictures for her. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Though she dug her heels in at the start, since the challenge began she has been paying her dues EVERY. SINGLE.DAY. She has not missed one workout since the challenge started & I’m so enjoying her company in the gym. She’s locking into that grind mindset she never had & I think she’s finally “caught the bug.” & now that we’re almost halfway through I’m seeing a totally different woman when I look at my mama—inside & out! ✨🧡 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ See, mom. You are capable of more than you give yourself credit for. Keep on doing the work—no stoppin’ now! & don’t worry—we don’t have to train for the olympics. 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
