Oh goodness, these trees feel like a lifetime ago, but they were only since June 2016. I love the way the tree roots are draped over the gold nuggets! In just a week it will be my two year clay anniversary. I started out with fiber clay (Das clay) and held steady with that for 7 months! Using fiber clay is NOT like polymer clay, at all! It's sticky paste that gets all over your hands, and fine detail is definitely more difficult, but I did make some pieces with decent detail.
When I opened my first block of polymer clay, April 2016, it was Sculpey flesh tone, and I couldn't believe how it was still soft without being in an airtight container! I actually struggled a lot in the beginning, but once I got the knack and learned some tricks, there was no going back!
Today, my favorite brands of clay are Premo Sculpey, Fimo Soft, and Kato. If I'm looking for an opaque clay, Premo Sculpey or Sculpey Souffle are great! They are strong and durable, but Souffle is definitely a more sensitive clay and is delicate in the oven. If I'm looking for a clay with a bit of a translucent quality, I pick up Fimo. My least favorite thing about Fimo is how it doesn't bake true to the block, and colors become MUCH darker and translucent after baking, so you definitely want to mix some white in the color to keep it a bit truer to the block.
Overall, my favorite go to clay is Premo Sculpey, hands down!
Before I really had a sense of what I was doing, I was using the Sculpey glaze, which I HATE! my favorite finish for painted, and yes, even pastel pieces is Americana Brand Ultra Matte sealer. There is no better water based sealer more easily attained on the market! There are some great specialty sealers, but none are better than Ultra Matte! I love it! Americana has a great gloss finish too!
Over all, it's trial and error, and while there are some things that an artist can never really teach, there a lot an artist can! The bulk of my success is in debt to little tricks I learned, and a few tips from artists gracious enough to give them(and believe me, the latter is RARE)!
If you're starting your clay jewelry journey, I wish you all the best!
