View monacomartino's Instagram When strolling around the Kandawgyi Lake in Yangon I met So Mi, who's about 50 years old and has a lot of stories to tell. He invited me to have tea with him the next day. After drinking green and black tea, we organized a Taxi as he offered to show me some non-touristic places he really likes. As traffic in Yangon is quite bad, you need a lot of time from one point to the other. We started out by visiting the famous white elephants, which aren't mentioned in any guide book, but apparently everyone in Yangon has visited them at least once. The are considered holy animals and people worship them accordingly. Afterwards we drove to the outskirts to see Yandanar Market, So Mis favorite place to stroll around. People actually couldn't believe seeing a tourist so far from the city and I was asked if I had lost my way We found a small restaurant in between the colorful market stands and had amazing burmese food, including fish, prawn and vegetable dishes. Finally we visited the British War Cementery, which houses countless graves of British Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen who died in WWI&WW2. When coming back to Yangon, several hours had passed but I was happy to have had a sightseeing tour far from the normal touristic paths.

View monacomartino's Instagram After a long lasting flight to Yangon I have arrived in Myanmar, the golden country. Few times have I felt so comfortable in a new country as fast as here. The Aircon of our Bus to Kathmandu led my body to develop a massive cold therefore I’m feeling quite week at the moment. Nevertheless I couldn't resist leaving my hotel and discovering Yangon, Myanmars largest city. In was only half a day but I’ve already gained so many new impressions. I visited the gilded Shwedagon Pagoda – Myanmar's most sacred Buddhist pagoda. The 99-metre-tall Stupa is located in a labyrinth of golden stupas, pagodas and shrines. By chance I met Maria, Cecilia and Angela who share a dormitory with me and spent the evening together. We couldn’t get enough of the spiritual atmosphere that reminded me a bit of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, as similarly the community helps together to run the place and keep it clean. Witnessing the golden tips shine in different shades from sunset to nightfall was just amazing. I wished to have stayed longer! We had amazing traditional food and light Myanmar Beer to close this day until I fell half dead into bed. People say that you come for the mountains and return for the people. I will return for both!
On my last day, Amrit and Suraj invited me to to their home for a farewell lunch. Amrit’s wife cooked Dhal Bat, the national dish and it was the best I’ve had so far (I had Dhal Bhat every day for the last two weeks). I know that I will come back not as a tourist but as a welcomed friend. Either go by Jeep for 14 hours over bumpy roads or take a plane for 45 minutes from one of Nepals dangerous mountain airports. What would you choose?
Of course we chose the flight from Jomsom to Pokhara. It turned out to be an amazing experience. We sat directly behind the cockpit and could see and feel every move of the pilots. To see the mountains rise up high before the front window was a strange feeling. Seeing the rotor blades working without a problem was calming. We had amazing views of the Annapurna range, from snow covered peaks to remote villages in on the deeply green foothills. Nevertheless were we more than happy when the plane landed safely in Pokhara.

On our way to Jomsom we passed by the small village of Lupra. It is one of the few villages in the region that still seems untouched. No tourists in sight, only the villagers going after their daily work in a calmly way. Lupra is the only remaining village of the so called Bon/Bön religion in The Annapurna region. Bön was the indigenous religion of Tibet before the arrival of Buddhism in the 7th century AD. Today, Bön is almost indistinguishable from Tibetan Buddhism in terms of doctrines and rituals, but differs in the religious authority and history it accepts, which has led to its practitioners and scholars considering it to be a distinct religion. It is a matter of controversy whether Bön influenced Tibetan Buddhism or the other way around. Bon people turn their prayer wheels anticlockwise and walk also around stupas anti clockwise, just to name some of their rituals. Suraj told us furthermore, that they offer the dead bodies to the local birds, similar to Zoroastrian traditions. Unfortunately the red Bon monastery was closed but we could feel the special atmosphere of this place in every street. It is worth reading a bit about this topic, as Bon surely influenced the much more famous Tibetan Buddhism a lot!

View monacomartino's Instagram Our last trekking day led us from Muktinath to Jomsom. As this is considered a very strenuous day most people take a Jeep. We decided to use our tired feet one more time and were rewarded with beautiful views of the Kali Gandaki Valley. As you can see the shape of nature has changed. On this side of Thorong La the landscape is a lot drier and without the intense green we used to see in Manang. Though you can marvel at the characteristic rock formations, created by gigantic glaciers hundreds of thousand years ago. The variety of different stones is huge. From fine slate structures over different types of conglomerate formations a geologist would be in paradise here. Nevertheless the sun burns down merciless and makes drinking about four liters a day necessary. View monacomartino's Instagram After our successful crossing of Thorong La Pass we arrived in Muktinath. This is a sacred place for both Hindus and Buddhists who consider the temple as one of the holiest places of pilgrimage and is located at an altitude of 3,710 meters in the Mustang region. The central shrine of the small Sri Muktinath temple is considered by Hindu Viashnavas to be one of the eight most-sacred shrines. Muktinath is one of the most ancient Hindu temples of God Vishnu. The waterway downstream from Muktinath along Kali Gandaki is the source of all Silas that are required to establish a temple of Vishnu. It has 108 water springs, a number which carries great significance in Hindu philosophy. The sacred water that flows in 108 bull faced pipes around the temple complex denotes all the sacred Pushkarini waters (Temple Tanks) from all the 108 Sri Vaishnava Divya Desams, where the devotees take their sacred bath. It is said to wash away your sins and grant you a wish. We enjoyed a lot to witness the lively and peaceful worship of both religions at this special place after being isolated from civilization for a while. Of course we didn’t want to miss out on washing away our sins with the freezing cold water. Let’s see if 108 water springs were enough for our burden

View monacomartino's Instagram When trekking for several days, you will reach a point where every single muscle of your legs is aching. Regular stretching, magnesium and proper nutrition can help soothe the pain. But there is nothing better than putting your tired feet into ice cold glacier water that’s coming down from the high peaks. After the freezing temperatures your body will react with hyperaemia, an increase of blood flow in your legs. This lowers muscle inflammation, loosens up cramped tissues and reduces the pain. The best way to treat muscular problems mostly aren’t pills but nature’s own medication!

View monacomartino's Instagram We made it to the top but the way to Thorong La Pass was all but easy.
Our guide Suraj had to go down during the night from base camp because of altitude sickness that had emerged gradually over the last days. Nevertheless we started the ascent with few hours of sleep at 4am. For the first time this season it had snowed over night and our head-torches showed us the way through the magically white covered landscape.
At around 5050 meters just before sunrise out of nowhere I started to suffer from strong nausea and paralyzing dizziness. An attempt to continue the ascent after a short break ended with me vomiting and nearly loosing consciousness. What would you do in such a situation?
As a doctor I know about the deadly risk of altitude sickness but also know well how to control my mind and body. Our team stuck together, found a solution for my backpack and took a break in the freezing cold with me. After treating myself with electrolytes, hot water and meditation we continued the ascent after an hour. As everyone from our team felt the effects of altitude we reduced the speed accordingly and kept on motivating ourselves. When reaching Thorong La Pass(5416m) after exhausting hours I knew that I had pushed my body to the absolute limit, like never before. I couldn’t stop the tears of joy running down my cheeks and few times in my life has a beer tasted better than in this moment. Our ascent shows, that being a strong team can cope with obstacles which seem impossible to overcome at first sight!

We arrived early at Thorong Base Camp (4540m) today which lies atmospherically above the Jharsang Khola river. This gave us time to make an acclimatization ascent to a nearby peak of 4960m, relax our tired muscles and prepare our minds for the next day. The plan ist to start at 4am and to reach Thorong La Pass(5416m) at about 7am before the wind gets to strong. What will follow is an exhausting descent of nearly 1700m to Muktinath. Therefore a big challenge stands before us and where could you focus better on this than in a cozy hammock? #bigdayahead #hammock #thorungpedi #basecamp #acclimatization #manang #annapurnacircuit #annapurna #gangapurna #annapurnahimal #himalaya #trekking #nepal # #beautiful #hikingadventures #hiking #exploring #adventures #travelislife #travelling #worldtrip #oncearoundtheworld #adoctorsjourney 1621636594837998687_1210503527

With best weather conditions during the whole day we could put our tired feet into the cold glacier water, marvel at the mountains through binoculars and just close the eyes with the sun on our faces. All this was accompanied by Kishors wonderful flute playing. A perfect day to recharge the batteries! #acclimatization #restday #manang #annapurnacircuit #annapurna #gangapurna #annapurnahimal #himalaya #trekking #nepal # #beautiful #hikingadventures #hiking #exploring #adventures #travelislife #travelling #worldtrip #oncearoundtheworld #adoctorsjourney

View monacomartino's Instagram When trekking in the Himalaya, acclimatization is an essential part of every itinerary. Unfortunately every year there are several trekkers and porters dying of acute altitude sickness when crossing the Thorong La Pass, the highest point of the Annapurna Circuit. Going up too fast without acclimatization, ignoring warning signs from the body and lack of hydration/minerals as well as overexertion are the most important risk factors for developing altitude sickness. To prevent this, we went up to 4700 meters on our first day in Manang, which is the highest I’ve been to in my life. It is fascinating that you can feel subjectively the air getting thinner every 100 meters. The heart rate rises, you have to take a breath with every step you take and the speed gets reduced accordingly. When reaching the top with your team and enjoying the view on Annapurna III (7555m left) and Gangapurna (7455m right), you forget the pain in your lungs immediately.

View monacomartino's Instagram On our way to Manang we passed by the picturesque village of Braka/Bhraga. Overlooking the traditional slate houses stands the more than 900 years old monastery. As the monks venture to Kathmandu in the beginning of October for teaching and local villagers look after the monastery we first had to find the key. An old man finally opened up the doors to the beautiful monastery, which is protected by a terrifying demon. Hundreds of Buddha statues, colorful woodcarvings and old religious texts, wrapped in silk opened up before us. After a long day of trekking a very welcomed cultural input to close the day!

View monacomartino's Instagram Nepal is the country where Shiva and Buddha meet. Hinduism and Buddhism both had a great influence in the nations history. Together with local beliefs they form a miscellaneous religious life that doesn’t allow clear separations between its components. On the Annapurna Circuit colorful prayer flags, old mantras and stupas give this landscape a strong spiritual character. Om mani padme hum!

View monacomartino's Instagram Today was one of the longest days of the AC. We started off in Upper Pisang at 7:15am and reached Manang at 4:30pm very tired. The trek goes through the drier upper part of the Manang district, cut off from the full effect of the monsoon by the Annapurna Range. People of this region mainly herd yaks and raise crops which only give one harvest a year. I took this picture after the exhausting ascent to Ghyaru (3700m) which rewarded us with an amazing view of both Annapurna II (left) and Annapurna III (7555m right). The following pictures show Ghyaru below the Pisang Peak (6091m), harvest near Ngawal (3660) and some greener scenery with a view on Annapurna III. Hopefully you can get a slight idea of the scenery we enjoyed today

View monacomartino's Instagram I woke up at 6am to find the surrounding mountains without a single cloud. Seeing the sun lighting up Annapurna II let me forget the bad sleep and the aching muscles in an instant. Thinking about that this peak is 4637 meters higher than my position, even though I’m already feeling the thin air is more than impressing. To make this easier to grasp, imagine this is nearly the altitude of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain of the alps. Looking at these bright peaks lets you forget easily how dangerous the conditions are up here. Therefore it’s good to maintain the respect before nature’s power at all times!

View monacomartino's Instagram Trekking through this scenery is breathtaking. The nature reminds you of the alps, but everything seems multiple times bigger. Even though you’re over 3000m there is plenty of vegetation, because the tree line lies at 4400m in the Himalaya due to its geographical location. You can find apple trees, blue pines and even wild apricot trees. The green nature is fighting with the blue sky over the most intensive color. Here you can find to yourself, get time to think about life and calm down your soul. It’s a blessing to be here!

View monacomartino's Instagram After a long and bumpy ride over muddy tracks through rainy weather yesterday we woke up to a clear sky this morning. Having spent a mediocre night because of the altitude amazing glimpses at the Annapurna II (7937m) compensated the lack of sleep. We started the trek from Chame (2670m) with the sun in our face along the Marsyangdi river towards Upper Pisang (3284m). From left to right Kissor (Porter), Suraj (Guide), Martin, Max and Julian.
