Jeanine's last Christmas Challenge
Silent, ordinairy, soulful Christmas
Michael & I are on the way to my parents, we gas the car. Next to us a couple fighting, heavily fighting. We laugh & send compassion: 'Happy Christmas'. We think about all the arguments in people's homes that come up under the christmas tree, expectations, tensions, exhaustion.
'Thank God, we are in peace'... 5 mins on the freeway, we argue about nonsense, which CD do we choose .... my arm is hurting badly... the real cause of my part of the tension. Sorry! We kiss, we stare out the window. We are late, it rains. Michael drives slowly.
Two glasses of Prosecco, two luxury chips bag later, midnight, dinner... Finally. Michael cooked in moms kitchen. Me, Jeanine, I did not want any fat in my dish, mom's spices expired 2014. Klausi lost his mind a little, creeps sweetly but helplessly through the kitchen. Gosh, things change.
I remember, when I was 9 years old, I was the one, who would sneak through the kitchen and Klausi would entertain me. 30 years later, roles have changed.
My parents are getting old. We were supposed to be in California, but because of Klausis condition, my mom asked me to come home. She is the mom type, who rarely expresses her needs. I know, this is important to her. We cancel our trip. 'It was the right thing to do'. 'Let's facetime'... Lari, younger daughter of Michael, sends a text. 30 years ago, we picked up the phone. 2016 we facetime, skype, instagram around the world. Crazy world.
We sit at Starbucks. Klausi has a moment of presence, my mom 'is talking like a waterfall', a German expression, if someone is talking nonstop... observing her, she looks like 50, acts like 20. Michael found a book on relationships, 'why men are the cause of break ups'. I am impressed, he chose the book himself - not my christmas present. I am grateful, 100% pure Gratitude: Mom is lively, Klausi found his brains for a few hours, Michael shares his insights. Before we head back to Munich, we go for sushi. A silent, ordinairy, soulful Christmas.❤️
