Where is your road leading?
In my teens, the thought of traveling to unique and far-flung destinations seemed so out of reach and impossible for a Filipino girl with a very modest and humble upbringing. My mum and I would watch travel shows on PBS, imagining exotic and fantastic places, but never thought of ourselves actually going to them.⠀
I met N while I was a poor college student, and we went for broke, spending every dollar we had (and some we didn’t) to fly back and forth across the country to see each other. Our love affair opened the US to me. After half a year of being broke, I moved to Detroit. I had never gone north of my home town in Canada, farther south than Baja California or farther east than Las Vegas... I left the So Cal Bubble.⠀
When we lived in the Midwest, the low cost of living allowed us to travel a LOT. Road trips to Canada and all over the eastern half of the US, across “The Pond” to Europe, back to the West Coast. I met the Atlantic for the first time, partied with Les Paul for New Years Eve in Times Square, kissed my boyfriend in Montauk (special nod to Endless Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), touched the Berlin Wall, hiked to a castle in the clouds in Bavaria, partook in Octoberfest in Munich, took a Tube in the London Underground, sat in aqua lagoons North of the Wall, drank Whiskey at North America’s only single malt distillery in Cape Breton ( #linkinbio-read now!). ⠀
Now that we live in HI, it’s more of a struggle to reach far and exciting destinations. We have to work longer days, bill more hours, endure stiff knees and tendonitis from all this computer time… but we’re still traveling. And we aren’t going to stop.
