"Savage" is the goal many youths have set to be called. In order to be "savage" you need to show disrespect, speak using profanity, bully and belittle others, fight, and use drugs and consume alcohol.
Pay attention to your youths if they express interest in being "savage" as its one of the most common phrases our youths use and strive to be called. "Yo man, my friend was savage today! He yelled at the teacher and flipped her off, and it was awesome!" A legit statement a youth made to his friend at a park. These same youths began swearing and teasing other kids around the park, and then taunting one another for how "savage" they are.
Watch, listen, and read some of the viral content on social media and you'll learn where this goal was inspired from.
I feel it is crucial to pay attention to what youths on social media are saying and posting. When you see what many youths post it is an eye opener to how impressionable the youths are within their community. Be aware.
We need to ensure we are there for our youths, and to help them understand self-confidence and how focusing on a goal allows them to not be enticed to follow other youths. I've spoken to my kids about "being savage" and why it is NOT something to strive for.
Listen to how your youths speak, and what they share. Our youths deserve better than being "savages".
