In our generation of social media influencers and increase in false information on the internet, it’s easy to forget the basics. We as trainers often hear “Cardio is the best for fat loss” or “Lower weight, High Reps to Cut” type of phrases. .

What we are forgetting is that MUSCLE is one of the key factors that contribute to your metabolic rate. By drastically reducing your muscle stimulus in your training program by decreasing heavily on intensity (weights) or reducing strength training session and replace it for cardio is NEGATIVELY HURTING YOUR METABOLISM... The more muscle you KEEP, more efficient your metabolism will be. The more muscle you LOSE, the lower your metabolism will be, which will create a unsustainable environment in your body for it to burn fat.

By under-loading your muscles, you are reducing proper muscle stimulus (Not lifting intensely enough or lowering the weight used), and it causes PROTEIN BREAKDOWN. You begin to lose muscle tissue, instead of keeping it. Same thing happens with too much cardio. .

Tip: When going into a fat loss phase, FOCUS on maintaining/building muscle by consistently lifting heavy, progressively overloading, and incorporating different training techniques to keep your muscle stimulus. Add cardio 1-2x a week and focus on nutrition, sleep, and stress management. .
