Viewing the eclipse from orbit were NASA’s Randy Bresnik, Jack Fischer and Peggy Whitson, ESA (European Space Agency’s) Paolo Nespoli, and Roscosmos’ Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Sergey Ryazanskiy. The space station crossed the path of the eclipse three times as it orbited above the continental United States at an altitude of 250 miles. •

View journeybeyondearth's Instagram Acting as a “natural telescope” in space, the gravity of the extremely massive foreground galaxy cluster MACS J2129-0741 magnifies, brightens, and distorts the far-distant background galaxy MACS2129-1, shown in the top box. The middle box is a blown-up view of the gravitationally lensed galaxy. In the bottom box is a reconstructed image, that shows what the galaxy would look like if the galaxy cluster were not present
~
This is the first direct observational evidence that at least some of the earliest so-called "dead" galaxies, where star formation stopped, somehow evolve from a Milky Way-shaped disk into the giant elliptical galaxies we see today. Previous studies of distant dead galaxies have assumed that their structure is similar to the local elliptical galaxies they will evolve into. This is due to the fact that elliptical galaxies usually contain older stars whereas spiral galaxies contain younger blue stars
~
Confirming this assumption in principle requires more powerful space telescopes than are currently available. However, through the phenomenon known as "gravitational lensing," a massive, foreground cluster of galaxies acts as a natural "zoom lens" in space by magnifying and stretching images of far more distant background galaxies. By joining this natural lens with the resolving power of Hubble, scientists were able to see into the center of the dead galaxy, MACS2129-1 ~

View journeybeyondearth's Instagram The IC 418, planetary nebula, lies about 2,000 light-years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Lepus. In the picture above, the nebula is undergoing its final stage in the evolution of a star. The star at the center of IC 418 was a red giant a few thousand years ago, but then ejected its outer layers into space to form the nebula, which has now expanded to a diameter of about 0.1 light-year. The stellar remnant at the center is the hot core of the red giant, from which ultraviolet radiation floods out into the surrounding gas, causing it to fluoresce. Over the next several thousand years, the nebula will gradually disperse into space, and then the star will cool and fade away for billions of years as a white dwarf. Enjoy! •

This isn't the work of one man or even a group of men. It is a historical process which mankind is carrying out in accordance with the natural laws of human development"

These words were said by the first man in space, Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin. On this day, 56 years ago, Gagarin became the first human to look back at our home, the Earth from space. His bravery and courage will always be admired by many people on this planet. .

View journeybeyondearth's Instagram I'm sure many of you already know but NASA has announced the discovery of seven Earth- size planets orbiting the star TRAPPIST-1!
