An Indigenous woman wearing only her Booka (skin cloak), looks out at us from a generic 1950s Australian cocktail party in which she is rendered invisible. Her face bears signs of an emotional distance from what is clearly an alien reality.
Home-maker #4, 2010, by Noongar artist Sandra Hill is a poignant work that embodies the harsh realities of life for members of the Stolen Generations and their relationship to non-Indigenous Australian culture and society.
Learn about the stories that make up WA through eyes of the artist by visiting the WA Journey gallery.

My inaugural attempt at jewelry photography to promote the new Aatong line of Mro crafts - part of our Craft for Conservation initiative over at the @creativeconservationalliance. Soon the Mro crafts will be available internationally which will generate revenue which is directed to a social enterprise, managed by and empowering Mro women. This alternative livelihood initiative is part of our holistic conservation plan to save the last primary evergreen forest of Bangladesh and the 30+ globally threatened species residing within it.
Huge thanks to @kortniecoles for her talents and @bcraft_initiatives and @aranya_crafts for their amazing overhaul of our crafts program! Please check out their work!

One of the fantastic prints that will feature in our upcoming exhibition with @jilamaraartsandcrafts “Ngini Parlingarri Amintiya Ningani” ... this etching and screenprint is by Timothy Cook “Kulama” 2017. The Kulama ceremony is performed in the late wet season (March-April) when a ring appears around the moon. Kulama is a traditional initiation for young men which coincides with the harvest of a certain wild yam species. Elders of both genders sing and dance for three days welcoming the boys into adulthood. The boy is then renamed with his true man’s name. 〰️ Artists Timothy Cook, Johnathon Bush, Pedro Wonaeamirri and Michelle Woody Minnapinni are making the journey from Melville Island, NT to join us at the exhibition opening @collinsplace on Wednesday 6th, and spend some time in the gallery to talk about Tiwi art and culture. ✈️

This mesmerising painting is by Maureen Poulson and is called ‘Kapi Tjukurrpa’. This painting depicts designs associated with Kapi Tjukurrpa (Water Dreaming) at Kalipinypa, a site northwest of Kintore. The tjukurrpa tells of an important rain making ceremony to invoke the elements. It is a powerful storm bringing on the lightning, thunderclouds and rain sending its deluge to rejuvenate the earth, filling rock holes, clay pans and creeks. It has the power to create new life and growth upon the land.
Acrylic on canvas, 183cm x 122cm.

Locally Made # 12 ~
@o_north_o is a Darwin-based social enterprise that creates clothing and interior textiles using hand-printed fabrics sourced from art centres in Indigenous Communities in Australia's Top End. All of their textiles are printed and made locally, creating beautiful pieces, while also contributing to the preservation of pride and independence among Indigenous artists.
We caught up with North's Founder, Crystal Thomas, and head of Communication and Project Facilitation, Amy Nicholas, while we were recently in Darwin, to chat about North's beginnings and the facilitation of creative collaboration.
