'When we only have a partial knowledge of a language, the imagination fills in the sense of a word, a phrase or a paragraph - like those drawing books where the pages are covered in dots that, as children, we had to join with crayon to complete the complete image.'

Yup, this book is lush Just a heads up, it will make you long to be fluent in Spanish. 1611934064269279767_4576148822

View feminist_bookshelf's Instagram "For most of her life, Ellen Pao did what you’re supposed to do to succeed. In her new book, “Reset: My Fight for Inclusion and Lasting Change,” Pao describes herself as a “dutiful daughter” of immigrants who excelled at Princeton and Harvard, where she picked up law and business degrees, and then headed west for the tech gold rush. Sure, she encountered some creeps along the way, and at times she felt underappreciated. But as she tells it, it wasn’t until landing at blue-chip venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers — which she famously, and unsuccessfully, sued for gender discrimination and retaliation — that she began to question whether she had been set up to fail. “The culture, I began to realize, is designed to keep out people who aren’t white men,” she writes early on in “Reset.” That sort of systemic critique is heretical in Silicon Valley, where wealthy men talk a big game about a meritocracy and transforming the world through technology. Never mind that a 2015 survey of 200 women at tech companies found that 60 percent had experienced sexual harassment, twice the rate of a separate study across industries. As Pao’s book persuasively shows, men in the tech industry love to exalt the notion of “disruption,” but those at her venture capital firm chafed at a woman disturbing their comfort. She paid the price." View feminist_bookshelf's Instagram The Last Love Song: A Biography of Joan Didion by Tracy Daugherty. " Joan Didion lived a life in the public and private eye with her late husband, writer John Gregory Dunne, whom she met while the two were working in New York City when Didion was at Vogue and Dunne was writing for Time. They became wildly successful writing partners when they moved to Los Angeles and co-wrote screenplays and adaptations together. Didion is well-known for her literary journalistic style in both fiction and non-fiction. Some of her most-notable work includes Slouching Towards Bethlehem, Run River, and The Year of Magical Thinking, a National Book Award winner and shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize, it dealt with the grief surrounding Didion after the loss of her husband and daughter. Daugherty takes readers on a journey back through time, following a young Didion in Sacramento, through to her adult life as a writer interviewing those who know and knew her personally, while maintaining a respectful distance from the reclusive literary great. The Last Love Song reads like fiction; lifelong fans, and readers learning about Didion for the first time will be enthralled with this impressive tribute." ✍ #5womenwriters #womenwriters #bookoftheday #booklover #book #bookrecommendation #bookshelf #feministshelf #feministbookclub #feministreads #feministbookshelf #thelastlovesong #joandidion #tracydaugherty 1609669473722984862_4344541447

View heathernolanphotography's Instagram In case you've been wondering what the #matriarchybookclub is all about, I just wanted to give a little recap. Back in May I walked into an Indigo specifically looking for a female voice to read, and noticed for the first time the great inbalance between published women (or at least promoted ) and men. It got me thinking about my favourite literary movements and the roles the women writers played (think Gertrude Stein) vs the men. It got me thinking about making the deliberate choice to make space for the women writers who so often get pushed off the shelves. I started the hashtag #matriarchybookclub as a way to collect the stories i am reading, but also as a way for us to share our recommendations with each other, and to shed a little light on this imbalance.

Please join in! I am challenging you to read more female authors. I am challenging you to use the hastag to participate in this conversation. Check out the books already tagged by some sweet folks! Xoxo

View feminist_bookshelf's Instagram I Am A Troll by Swati Chaturvedi. As a consequence for her research and writing this book, Swati receives about 1,000 death threats a day. "Social media in India is awash with right-wing trolls who incite online communal tension and abuse and sexually harass journalists, opposition politicians and anyone who questions them. But who are they? Why do they do what they do? And how are they organized? In this explosive investigation conducted over two years and including interviews with top politicians, bureaucrats, marketeers and trolls, Swati Chaturvedi finally lifts the veil over this murky subject.
