View consentucation_project's Instagram Most of us heard about the #MeToo movement when Alyssa Milano made it go viral, but the movement was actually started a decade ago (back in 2007) by a woman named Tarana Burke.
•
The initial objective of the movement was to call attention to sexual violence against women of color, and what being a survivor means for those people. She has devoted her life to working in marginalized communities to decrease the stigma surrounding survivors of sexual assault, and to reminding those survivors that they are not alone and their experience matters.
•
Burke’s continued goal with the #MeToo movement is to center focus on people of color and other marginalized communities. She refuses to get swept up in the current direction of the movement (which, despite its intention of universality, has skewed white and privileged), and believes that it is important to talk about these things in communities that haven’t previously been afforded that context. Particularly in the black community, Burke says, “There are nuances in our community around sexual violence that are informed by centuries of oppression and white supremacy, but we have to confront them. Across the board there’s shame, but in our community there’s shame on top of fear on top of ostracization—there are layers of things we have to unpack.”
•
Burke believes that, in order to see lasting change from the viral popularity of the #MeToo movement, it needs to come off of social media, and translate into real structural change. We need to explore what justice looks like for survivors of sexual assault, harassment, and violence in communities of color, and unpack the history of oppression that has contributed to a culture of fear and shame.
•
“We’ve got to get a clearer understanding of what justice is and what people need to feel whole. And if we’re ever going to heal in our community, we have to heal the perpetrators and heal the survivors, or else it’s just a continuous cycle.”
