I photographed this magnificent Boomslang on assignment in Cameroon for @natgeo. Boomslangs have exceptionally large eyes and excellent eyesight and often move their heads from side to side to get a better view of what's in front of them (like a photographer from Sweden). Please go to @mattiasklumofficial to see an African dawn near Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa and more images from our projects around the world! The average adult boomslang is 100–160 cm (3¼–5¼ feet) in total length, but some exceed 183 cm (6 feet). The venom of the boomslang is primarily a hemotoxin; it disables the blood clotting process and the victim may well die as a result of internal and external bleeding. The venom has also been observed to cause hemorrhage into tissues such as muscle and brain. Inspite of all this, the boomslang is a timid snake, and bites generally occur only when people attempt to catch, handle or kill the snake. When curious, confronted or cornered, they can inflate their necks and assume their striking "S"-shaped pose. Scientists like my friend Zoltan Takacs study the genetic and molecular set-up by collecting venom and DNA samples from these snakes, their prey and predators and are hopeful that the Boomslang may soon combat heart disease and this will not affect the snakes in the wild at all. #conservation #new #drugs #innovation #ecosystemservices #respectnature @thephotosociety @irisalexandrov @mattiasklumofficial @alexandrovklumofficial @mattiasklumcollection @natgeo 1649374702415729409_5465001496

View ethanstaats's Instagram "red touches yellow; you're a dead fellow. red touches black; you're ok, Jack." or so the old rhyme goes... pretty much anywhere except the United States of America this could earn you a visit to the hospital. this is not to suggest that you should be scared of any and every snake you see. snakes don't want to hurt you; they just want you to NOT hurt them. sometimes they feel threatened enough by you to utilize the desperate measure of envenomating you... but only a few groups are capable of doing this, only a subsection of which are dangerous to humans, and among bites by both dangerous and safe species most are dry (no venom injected). so, worry over the danger of snakes is by far and away mostly hype... what it is to suggest, though, is that if you do interact with snakes, the best course of action is to always exercise caution. only interact closely with the snake under the direct supervision of experienced or trained professionals; this will help to prevent injury to you and to the snake.

as the only species on Earth apparently with our magnitude of capability to both destroy life and conceive of the destruction we can inflict we kinda owe it to everything else to be as nice as we can... plus there's a ton of science demonstrating that the rest of life does a lot of really important and irreplaceable things that we benefit from. #environmentalism #environmentalstewardship #ecosystemservices #ecosystemfunctions #biodiversity #herping #CostaRica #incidentals #serpentes #snakes #elapidae #Micrurusnigrocinctus #CentralAmerican #coralsnake #serpientecoral #venomous #venenoso #lil #cute #pretty #noodle #herpphotography #ParqueNacionalSantaRosa #explore #travel #discover #nomad 1648641987009886733_5370893571
