When the weather is like it is today & I think about what those athletes in the @britishrowing team are doing I don’t miss it at all. All those hours, every day of the week for 12 months of the year...and repeat for many many years. •
At this time of the year they’ll be in small boats like this one in the video training and trialling for selection next spring. Cold, dark, wet, tiring until you can barely stand, then carry on & do more. You have to, it’s the only way, It’s the job & it’s relentless. I promise you though, when it all falls into place it’s absolutely worth it!
What I do miss is the team. Being amongst it, being with your mates & knowing (not always feeling it but knowing) that you’re gradually getting better & that you’re all after a common goal. That’s a pretty powerful feeling & a great motivation.
Now, I need time. I need weekends which I never had because my kids need me home & there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing than making their lives fun, interesting & memorable.
Like in my previous life it’s not all plain sailing, it’s not easy but it’s the job & like rowing was, it’s the best job I’ve ever had!
Incidentally I’m looking forward to watching @bradwiggins at the indoor rowing championships in December at Lee Valley Velo Park, get stuck in there! Big respect!
