View kristianlaemmleruff's Instagram Excited to announce my next solo exhibition 'Woomera' will be showing at the Araluen Arts Centre next year in July & August in Mparntwe (Alice Springs). So excited to have the opportunity to work with this wonderful gallery!
Situated on the lands of the Kokatha people in South Australia, the Woomera Prohibited Area is the largest and most technologically advanced weapons testing range in the world. Covering an enormous 122, 188 square kilometres this restricted defence area was established in 1946 via an agreement between the British and Australian Governments. Over the past 70 years the WPA has facilitated nuclear bomb test, radioactive-waste storage, a detention centre, the world’s largest uranium mine and has hosted countless missile and rocket tests. Blowing up the country and permanently damaging traditional lands and significant sites, this is imperialism hard at work; conveniently tucked away ‘outback’ - out of sight, out of mind. In showing this work I am wanting to grow public awareness and contribute to a national conversation we need to be having about de-militarising Australia.
