View joelsartore's Instagram Arctic cookie stars may look like sweet treats, but I’d advise not biting into one if you spot it laying on a rock off the coast of the northwestern United States. They’re considered quite rare and absolutely won’t taste like a sugar cookie. These sea stars reproduce both sexually and asexually. Embryos hatch into larvae and then metamorphosize into the star shape pictured here. They can grow up to 11 cm across and feed on sea sponges.
These sea stars were photographed at the @AlaskaSeaLifeCenter, a public aquarium focused on education, wildlife response, and scientific research.

View alimahmudov_'s Instagram Image by @joelsartore | Right now, in Central and Southern Mexico, monarch butterflies are finishing their incredible 3,000 mile and 4-generation journey from the US and Canada and are settling in for the winter. This generation of monarchs will live happily in these warm climates for six to eight months until it is time to begin the whole journey again. They will then migrate back north for the summer, landing on milkweed to lay eggs for a new generation, and providing pollination to many plants along the way. With butterfly season coming to a close, we are wrapping up our #pollinatormonday campaign. Thank you so much for following us on our journey this summer! Pollinator Mondays may be coming to an end, but helping pollinators should never stop. Continue to support pollinators and help save the Great Monarch Migration by planting milkweed in the summer months, avoiding mowing before fall, and choosing to practice organic lawn and garden care. You can always click the link in my bio to freshen up your knowledge about pollinators and to learn more about how to help. Thank you for choosing to be a #pollinantorhero! Let’s continue to #savetogether!

View catchingtheeye's Instagram The good ol’ Common Yabby (Cherax destructor) has got adaptation to surrounds and weather sorted. They usually vary in colour from olive-green to brown, but can also be blue, yellow, red or black depending on the habitat, location and individual. They have a pair of large claws at the front end, followed by legs to support any occasion. Four pairs of walking legs and then four pairs of small swimming legs called swimmerets. These swimmerets are covered with fine hairs to which the female attaches her eggs. A central tail flap is surrounded by four other flaps that are used to move the crayfish rapidly through the water, as well as curling up to form a brood chamber. There are two eyes on the end of eyestalks, but the senses of touch and taste are far more important, and are perceived using a pair of large feelers (or antennae) and a pair of small, fine, centrally located feelers (or antennules). Even reproduction works with their surrounds, brought about by increases in day-length and in water temperature, with mating beginning in the spring once the water temperature has risen above 15 °C. Their eggs do the same as small, green, oval eggs are attached to the swimming legs they then take 19 – 40 days to hatch, depending on the water temperature. Young yabbies moult every few days, pumping water under the new, soft shell to make room for growth. They may lose legs during the moult, but they can even usually regenerate these!⠀
